At the end of June, two innovative pilot projects were completed in Narva: a captivating light and sound installation in the Joala factory building at Kreenholm and a virtual tour of the Kreenholm district. These actions are part of the international TExTOUR project, aimed at developing cultural tourism in little-known regions of Europe and beyond.
The installation, created by Estonian sculptor and installation artist Elo Liiv, opened on 28th June. This installation is divided into three parts, each offering a unique artistic experience. In the right wing of the Joala factory on the 5th floor there is the installation named “288 patterns”, where a small part of the thousand patterns created at the Kreenholm textile factory over the centuries sparkled with reflections of light on the window glass of one of the factory halls, creating a unique play of colors.
In the left wing on the first floor, the “Threads of Fate” sound and light installation represents the continuous passage of time at Kreenholm. It symbolizes that Kreenholm’s time has not stopped still and the life threads of the people who once worked here carry on spinning, from which the fabric of the future generations will continue to be made. The sound of machines, people’s stories, the continuous hiss of yarn and threads, mixing with the roar of the Narva River, captures us all like part of the patterns in a common Kreenholm fabric.
Both installations can be viewed with a guided tour organized by the Narva Museum on the territory of Kreenholm.
The third component of the installation, visible only after dark, features a stunning light display on the Joala factory tower, standing out vividly in the evening sky.
The second completed pilot action is a virtual tour, which offers a virtual journey over the Kreenholm district and textile factories. This tour allows users to “fly” over Kreenholm and explore various points of interest from the comfort of their homes. The virtual tour is accessible at https://360.visitnarva.ee/en/kreenholm-district.
The goal of the TExTOUR project is to improve the economic and social situation of 8 pilot regions with a rich cultural and historical heritage, one of which is the city of Narva and specifically the Kreenholm area, through the development of cultural tourism.
The project will last until 09/30/2024. All documents developed within the framework of the project will be available on an open platform for use at the state and local levels. The main partner in the project is the Spanish organization Fundación Santa María la Real. TExTOUR project received a grant from the EU Horizon 2020 Program. The total project budget for the entire period and for all 17 partners is 3,950,468.75 €.
